Assassin's Words of Wisdom:

Pentium Processors are more powerful than their AMD counterparts, however AMD's do boast a little better graphics performance.  Both do HTPC's very well.
If you are unsure which one to use, Intel processors are a safe bet and what I would recommend.  Intels are more power but AMD's have better graphics (for gaming purposes not media playback) however AMD's typically run hotter.
For standard HTPC purposes, an i3 processor is what I recommend and all the processing power that you will need and has great graphics capabilties as well.  Our i3 systems can handle (5) 1080p video streams at one time without using more than 20% of the processing power. The 2.6GHZ Pentium is a great budget processor that can handle a lot for its inexpensive price tag and is perfect for bare bones and extender systems.

So why upgrade to an i5?:
1) Possibility of very large media/music libraries (500+ movies).
2) Some processes (ripping, burning, etc.) are faster with an i5.
3) Better graphics capabilities for mid-level gaming (marginal)
4) Possibility of high end computer gaming and graphics card addition in the future.
5) Sense of security (this is honestly why most people upgrade).  Just knowing they have a little overkill on the processor side of things lets their minds rest!

So why upgrade to an i7??
1) Possibility of computer gaming in the future.
2) Even faster processes than the i5.
3) Sense security knowing your HTPC processing power is many many times more than what is needed.
4) You hate money.

NOTE: The new Haswell CPU's REQUIRE either an H87 or Z87 Motherboard.

Assassin's Words of Wisdom

We have tested over a dozen SSD's from a half dozen companies and found that the top 2 performing SSD's in our studies were head and shoulders above the rest.  When SSD failure rates are high in many brands, our research and efforts result in a more dependable HTPC system for you.

If you are unsure of what size to use, a 120GB SSD is a safe bet
(This fits the Windows operating system on it plus a little buffer for any additional programs you might want to add onto it later.)

So why go larger than 120GB?
2 Main Reasons:
1) The larger the SSD, the faster the read speeds. Larger SSD's allow very fast retrieval of information, much faster than standard hard drives.  Although its not needed for HTPC purposes, some programs might see added benefits of being installed on an SSD's including games and other large programs (drafting/architectural programs etc.)
2) More room on your C: drive for programs, files, etc. (having a full C: drive is a very bady thing!). less

Assassin's Words of Wisdom:

This is the parity drive to be used in Flex Raid server configurations.  The Parity drive is what is used to back up the other drives in your system.  A Single Parity Drive can back up to 8 other Hard Drives.

Make sure your Parity drive is as large as your largest hard drive (also keep this in mind for future additions).

So if you have both a 3TB drive and a 2TB drive that you use for storage, you need your parity drive to be 3TB!

Assassin's Words of Wisdom

For basic HTPC purposes 4GB or RAM is plenty of RAM.

However this is one of those times when I never take my own advice because at under $20 to double your RAM to 8GB, it's an easy decision.

Whether you will use it or not in your HTPC might be debateable but no one will debate that this is the best $20 upgrade that can be purchased, if nothing else for the sake of knowing you have RAM overkill in your system to handle whatever the future might bring.

I'd recommend 8GB for the sake of future proofing and because its so inexpensive even though 4GB is technically all that is needed.

Assassin's Words of Wisdom:

Remember that Windows 7 does not natively support blu-ray playback!  So this means you cannot just take a blu-ray disc from off your shelf at home and pop it into the system and begin watching it.

So you are left with 2 options for viewing your blu-ray media.
1) Buy additional blu-ray software (typically $100)
2) Rip your blu-rays onto your HTPC for permanent storage by converting them to MKV format (without losing any audio or video quality).  This is a very simple task and we offer a guide for free on how to do it on the free guides section of our blog.

To rip a blu-ray onto your hard drive, only a blu-ray drive is needed, not a burner.  A burner is needed if you want to burn your blu-ray videos that are on your HTPC onto a blu-ray disc for viewing on other blu-ray players.

Assassin's Words of Wisdom:

Power supplies are a component where people overspend often.  Instead of buying a better lower wattage power supply that meets all their needs they purchase a more powerful power supply and end up spending more each month on power they never use.  For most units, a 300-400 watt power supply is all that is needed!  Save your money and don't overspend unless you have already calculated your estimated power supply needs with the link below!

A modular supply means you only have connected the power cords needed to your specific build.  While this isn't required, it helps improve airflow, design, and space inside of your case.

Assassin HTPC uses only highly reviewed power supplies manufactured by what most regard as the top quality power supply company with regards to quality and consistency.

 Assassin's Thoughts:

Using a power line adapter, you can send internet signal by using your households power outlets.  We use only high performing (500mbps) highly reviewed adapters to ensure good quality.

*Keep in mind, that although more effecient than wireless, these still aren't up to the same standards as a direct hardline from your router and we cannot guarantee 500mbps performance.  Many things can decider performance levels, including internal wiring structure itself which are out of our control!

 Assassin's Words of Wisdom:

Windows 7 is recommended for HTPC purposes because it allows you the most flexibility and options.

Home Premium is the recommended Windows 7 of choice.

Below is a chart comparing the different versions of Windows 7 for your review.
Windows 7 Comparison

The XBMC only selections is based on a free basic operating system such as Ubuntu that allows budget concious customers to run XBMC.  However keep in mind you might run into some compatibility problems with various plug-ins etc. that are designed specifically with Windows in mind and these systems will typically be much more limited in what they are capable of doing.

For Servers: Windows Home Server gives your remote connection capabilities and is less expensive than a full Windows 7 and is what we would recommend.  However either will work with Flexraid.

Assassin's Words of Wisdom:

Think long and hard about Flexraid before you decide to go with another RAID option.  Flexraid offers the best overall option for long term storage and includes our step by step guide with it to keep it simple and easy for you.

Although it costs a little more upfront in setup costs and because you have to purchase an extra drive initially for use as the backup or "parity" drive, the long term benefits outweigh the costs tenfold.

To briefly summarize, a single backup or "parity" drive lets you back up 8 other hard drives.  So the long term cost benefit is greatly in your favor!

FlexRaid Full Setup w/ License (recommended) (+ $199.99)
FlexRaid Full Setup w/ License (recommended)

FlexRaid: *Assassin Recommended* - Uses 1 drive to back up to 7 other drives using a "parity drive".  Simple explanation is that a parity drive converts your information into binary numbers and stores it allowing you to backup up to 7 other drives instead of storing it as actual data.  When one drive fails, it can deduce the information that was on it by subtracting the other drives information from it and restoring that drive.

Positives: 1 HD backs up 7 other hard drives.  Can add hard drives as you grow!
Negatives: More expensive initial setup (however this will pay for itself many times over in the long run however!)

The ability to control your HTPC is something that should definitely not be overlooked and can make the HTPC go from an invoncenience to the greatest gadget ever invented.  Simply by finding a control style that you like.  It might be a combination of the below.  (I use a standard size mouse and keyboard and a remote)

I've included several different options below.  Take your time to look at each one to decide which one fits your needs best!  And keep in mind these aren't the only control options out there but unfortunately we can't offer all of them!

One of my personal favorites is the Mini RF Full Wireless Keyboard with Touchpad ($39.99).  Its a great combination of size and functions!

Even if 50% of the time it lives in a closet or drawer.  At some point you will want a full sized mouse and keyboard and it will make your HTPC experience much more enjoyable when you do!
